Why Core Web Vitals Matter

Core web vitals are a set of metrics that measure the real-world experience of users on your website. When a potential client lands on your website, every second counts. If your site loads slowly or shifts around as they try to click, chances are they won’t stick around to book that discovery call. Core Web Vitals measure how smooth and fast your website feels, and for small business owners, this can be the difference between winning a high-paying client or losing them to a competitor. Core web vitals are particularly important to mobile users as 80% of users abandon a website if it doesn’t display correctly on their phone.

What are the core web vitals?

There are four core web vitals:

  • Largest contentful paint (LCP) measures the time it takes for the largest content element on your website to load and become visible to the user. For example, how quick the main image as you click onto your website takes to load.
  • First Input Delay (FID) measures the length of time it takes for the browser to respond to an interaction such as clicking on a link or pressing a button.
  • Cumulative layout shift (CLS) measures how stable your website is visually. If your website has any unexpected layout shifts, it can annoy the user giving them a bad user experience when on your website.
  • Interaction to next paint (INP) assesses a page’s overall responsiveness to the user’s interactions. It measures the time that it takes for the page to respond to all click, tap, and keyboard interactions.

How to Measure Core Web Vitals

There are a number of tools you can use to measure your core web vitals, including:

  • Google Search Console
  • PageSpeed Insights
  • GTmetrix

Once you have measured all of your core web vitals, you can then use this data to help improve your website!

How to Improve Your Core Web Vitals

There are many things you can do to improve your Core Web Vitals, including:

  • Optimise your images
  • Decrease the size of your JavaScript and CSS files
  • Use a content delivery network (CDN)
  • Avoid using too many third-party scripts
  • Test your website on different devices and browsers

By using these tips you can help to improve your website’s Core Web Vitals to provide better user experience overall for your customers.

If your site feels clunky on a phone, busy prospects won’t fight through it, they’ll click away. For a single-person business, that means missed opportunities for growth. Strong Core Web Vitals ensure your site feels seamless, giving clients confidence to book that all-important call with you.

Core Web Vitals are a crucial part of providing a good user experience on your website. By measuring and improving your core web vitals, you can make your website more user-friendly and improve the ranking of your website in search engine results pages.
